What You Need to Know to Master Luminous Event Season Makeup

Event season is upon us, my friends, and so is event season makeup. The summer brings celebration and fun, but it also brings some less pleasant features. Unrelenting heat, UV rays, and sweat can all be a detriment to your look’s application and longevity.

This is partially why I’ve been such a fan of the trend towards glass-skin makeup. Glass skin promotes a luminous, even, and ‘lit from within’ application that prioritizes keeping the skin even and radiant, like the glass in its namesake. Glass skin techniques focus on highlighting natural features and making the skin look healthy and bright, which is perfect for summertime events when your makeup is more likely to shift in the sunshine.

In order to learn more about how to perfect this look, I booked a consultation with Jess, the Cosmetics Lead at terra20’s flagship store. As someone who is passionate about cruelty-free beauty, I was excited to learn that terra20 offers makeup consultations with their cosmeticians. All of their products are cruelty-free and free of harmful chemicals, so this is an exciting alternative if you’re looking for a place to help apply your event makeup, but want to keep your ethics top of mind. Booking an appointment was easy using their Cosmetics Consultation calendar. Huge bonus: the $25 appointment fee can be directly applied to products, which means you can apply the fee as a credit towards your new Holy Grail beauty products.

Priming is everything

I’ll let you in on a secret: the key to bright, luminous makeup begins before you even apply makeup. Primers provide a smooth layer of hydration before you apply your product, which helps to refine your pores and keep your makeup looking fresh for a longer period. Primer is also a critical component for achieving that ‘lit from within’ glow that’s all the rage in the beauty world right now.

If you’re looking for a dewy, fresh look as opposed to a more mattified one, choose your primer accordingly. Right now, I opt for a more luminous primer to add brightness and glow. For this look, we used the 100% Pure Luminous Primer, which made my skin look so hydrated. This specific primer uses completely natural light-reflective pigments, adding a ton of radiance. If you’re looking to accomplish a more glowy look and you have oily skin, strategically apply a luminous primer where you would like to add shine and a mattifying primer in areas where you notice oil buildup. This can be a great way to avoid getting too much bang for your buck when it comes to shine.

Pick the right foundation

Similar to your primer, a skin-focused makeup look depends on your base makeup choice. When I wear this look in the daytime, I often opt to only use a tinted moisturizer to keep my natural skin visible. When I’m looking for something a little more polished, however, I always reach for the 100% Pure Water Foundation.

I can’t say enough good things about this product. I’ve been using it for a year and go into crisis mode when I hit the bottom of the bottle. This foundation is sheer enough to keep your skin feeling like your skin, while still offering enough coverage to even and conceal problem areas. To sheer it out even further, we applied this using the EcoTools beauty blending sponge, which leaves a more radiant finish than a brush will often offer.

Sculpt strategically

Jess did an incredible job shaping my face using tactics that complimented a luminous and glowing makeup look. Jess chose to skip a more dense contour, opting instead to sculpt using bronzer. I’ve been loving the departure away from contouring products towards the more natural and healthy glow that bronzing offers.

To achieve similar results, Jess used the Saint On Cloud 9 bronzer with a light hand in all of the low points of my face that could use some shadow-- typically on the forehead, directly below the cheekbone, and under my jaw. This shade was a perfect neutral for me: not too warm or cool toned, and very buildable. We also used the Saint 24k glow highlighter to add a warm, golden glow to the high points of the face to add emphasis.

Have fun with the eyes!

A versatile base makeup leaves lots of room for creativity with eyeshadow. I was so excited to play with the Pacifica Pink Nudes Mineral Eyeshadows. I had heard amazing things about Pacifica, but was blown away by how pigmented and buildable these vegan shadows were. Jess created a lovely eye look with these shadows.

The darker tones in the palette also act as a beautiful liner on the bottom lashes to add some additional depth. We finished off the look with the Pure Anada Mascara to add a pop of drama.
