The 5-Step Winter Skincare Routine You Shouldn’t Scroll Past

We’ve all felt the overwhelm of step-by-step skincare guides. Whether you’re following a how-to video or an extensive article, there are just too many steps, often featuring products that you don’t know how to get your hands on. We’re here to fix that.

First things first: does skincare order really matter? Turns out, it does—almost as much as which products you’re using.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to spend an hour each morning on skincare. (Nobody should have to set their alarm to go off before the sun’s even up just to wash their face!)

Forget the 12-, 10-, or even 8-step skincare routines that all influencers seem to swear by. We’ve narrowed down the ideal winter skincare routine to the five most basic steps so you can get on with your day…without sacrificing your skin.

Our Easy 5-Step Winter Skincare Routine

1. Cleanser

Be honest: during winter, do you tend to skip the cleanser and jump straight into moisturizing? If so, you’re doing it wrong. As dry as your skin might be, it can’t absorb any of the key ingredients from moisturizers or other products if it’s not totally free of oil and grime.

Your skin deserves better. Instead, find a cleanser that works for your skin type. Creamy cleansers do wonders for drier skin. Follow it up with a face mask, and rinse lightly so that your skin can fully absorb all those beneficial oils.

Tired of cleansers that leave skin flakey and irritated? Us too. That’s why we switched to Viva Organics’ Milk Cleanser. Apricot kernel oil, aloe vera and seaweed extracts, and witch hazel work together to protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier, while oat protein, silk amino acids, and ylang-ylang essential oils leave skin soft and smooth.

2. Serum

Serums are the big guns in your winter skincare routine. They contain many active ingredients that absorb quickly into your skin, making them the ideal next step after cleansing. In addition to being lightweight, other benefits include:

● Soothes sensitive skin

● Improves appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

● Evens out skin tone

● Helps maintain the skin’s protective barrier against free radicals and future damage

There are many different serums with unique benefits, so make sure to select the one that’s right for your skin type. And since serums really are the MVPs of skincare, it’s a good idea to have one for the morning and one for night-time to target multiple concerns. However, if you have sensitive skin, opt to use them either in the morning or in the evening (instead of both), or only apply them every other day.

While conventional glycolic acid products can be drying and irritating, this serum is anything but. This serum is specially formulated to meet in the middle of functional exfoliation and hydration, meaning you can clarify uneven skin while improving its natural glow and texture.

Want to know a secret? This is where rosy cheeks come from. Rose hydrosol and hyaluronic acid promote bounce and elasticity without drying out the skin. Meanwhile, chamomile and calendula calm your complexion.

3. Eye Cream

Most eye creams are lighter and thinner, so they should be applied before thicker products like moisturizers and sunscreens. This is also the only step you can skip—provided you’re not worried about aging or dry skin around the eyes. Eye creams are only necessary for those combatting fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and dry skin.

When it comes to using products around your eyes, the gentler, the better. The skin in this area is sensitive and easily irritated, so opt for simple hydration formulas with an emphasis on de-puffing and protecting. And always apply eye cream by gently patting it on, using your ring finger (it’s your weakest finger and pulls the least amount on your eye’s gentle skin).

Once you get to a certain age, you stop waking up naturally bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Luckily this Firming Eye Cream utilizes the Davidson plum superfruit alongside vitamin C to keep your eyes looking young.

4. Moisturizer

A lot of people believe that moisturizer is bad for oily skin. That’s simply not true. Everyone, regardless of skin type, should be using a moisturizer, ideally twice a day. Moisturizers are what keep your protective skin barrier healthy and hydrated. They also prevent the products applied before them from rubbing off and encourage your skin to soak up your serum and eye cream even faster.

No matter your skin type (dry, oily, prone to breakouts, or easily irritated), there’s a moisturizer out there for you. Look for natural ingredients that mirror the things our bodies produce naturally but could use more of, such as vitamins and proteins. A moisturizer with built-in SPF is also ideal, but not necessary as long as you layer it with sunscreen (see step 5).

Heads up! Oily skin needs moisture, too. The Oily Skin Moisturizer uses macadamia and grapeseed oils to hydrate your skin without creating oily build-up, while witch hazel and aloe help control your skin’s natural oil production.

5. Sunscreen

Lastly, but certainly not least, it doesn’t matter if it’s -30°C or if you’re headed to Fiji for a tropical getaway—sunscreen is a must. It must also be applied last. Everything you apply before sunscreen is working to penetrate the skin. Sunscreen is different in that it acts more like a shield, protecting rather than penetrating.

So, how much SPF is enough? Well, when it comes to your face, SPF 30 is the bare minimum, while SPF 50 is recommended on high UV days. And remember that one coat isn’t always enough! If you’re braving the elements—especially water, which could potentially rinse the sunscreen from your skin—it’s a good idea to reapply throughout the day.

When it comes to sunscreen, texture is everything. Leave that sticky feeling behind with this 100% Mineral Sunscreen. With no added chemicals and ethically sourced ingredients, skin is protected from the sun and feels great, too.

After you’ve applied sunscreen to your skin, don’t skip the lips! As one of the more sensitive parts of our bodies, our lips need extra protection from the sun’s harmful rays. This By Day lip balm protects lips all day, any time of year, and comes in a delightfully tropical flavour.

What about face masks?

You might be wondering where the ever-popular face mask fits into the equation. While not absolutely necessary to achieve healthy, hydrated skin, face masks are definitely worth it if you want to add a little TLC to your routine. Most masks require a freshly cleansed face for application, so use them between a cleanser and serum. Plus, that way, if you have to rinse it off afterward, you’re not taking any other products with it!

Roses are red, but your skin won’t be after using this mask! Rosehip oil and pure rosewater are the dynamic duo working to calm sensitive skin, while Moroccan red clay gently purifies. As an added bonus, our organic cotton cloth is provided to remove the mask smoothly without irritation.
