Dry shampoo: Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. I’ll be the first to raise my hand here - as a person with naturally thin and oily hair, I’m one shampoo-less day away from looking like the last time I showered was a decade ago.

All that said, conventional dry shampoo doesn’t lack shortcomings. Most traditional dry shampoos come in aerosol cans. This can be a huge bonus if you’re looking for volume, but where there’s an aerosol can, there’s a propelling agent creating that burst of air and product. In the majority of aerosols, that propellant is a chemical like butane, propane, or alcohol. These may be great for distributing product quickly, but they’re not exactly the ingredients that you hope to find in a personal care product. Especially when it’s being applied to an area where skin absorption is 5 to 10 times higher than it is on other areas.

On the other hand, powdered dry shampoos can be challenging to work with. And if you’ve ever tried to brush through a dry shampoo while in a rush, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Without those yucky propellants found in aerosols, there’s no pressure to help dispense the shampoo, which causes the product to distribute in more of a powdered consistency. If you’re not thorough with brushing it through, this can make your roots look white as a ghost.

My search for the right dry shampoo has been expansive. I’ve tried tons of powdered dry shampoos that do a solid job and work in a pinch, but I’ve consistently been on the hunt for a holy grail.

Enter overnight dry shampoo

Kaia Naturals is a crazy cool brand whose mission is to create natural and effective alternatives to products that are typically associated with high toxicity. I’m a huge fan of Kaia, but was skeptical about the one product that I kept hearing about over and over: their Takesumi Overnight Dry Shampoo. Their approach makes sense at face value: By combining time-activated deodorizers and detoxifying ingredients like activated charcoal, we can take advantage of all of the benefits of dry shampoo without all the effort (or aerosols) by using it before bed and brushing it through in the morning.

One of my favourite aspects of the Kaia dry shampoo is the dispenser. Rather than using a messy shaker-top, Kaia uses a unique design that dispenses the dry shampoo with a great quality of dispersion, but without any of the damaging chemicals or environmental impact that come along with aerosol cans.

How to use

Kaia recommends using their dry shampoo overnight and on dry roots. While you sleep, this bad boy is hard at work neutralizing odor, absorbing excess oil, and promoting volume and shine.

The magic really happens in the morning when it’s time to get ready. All you need to do is quickly run a brush through your hair. There’s no white roots, and no hassle. I was so surprised by how simple it was to work this product through my hair, and how much less chalky it felt compared to aerosol and powders.

Happy hair, happy planet

One look at the ingredient list for this product will put your mind at ease. There’s nothing in this product that: 1. You wouldn’t be able to pronounce, or 2. Wouldn’t feel comfortable in a product that absorbs into your skin. Stand-out ingredients like activated charcoal, rice starch, and kaolin assist with oil absorption and shine, while orange and wood oil keep your tresses smelling yummy.

Not only is the Takesumi Dry Shampoo naturally-derived, it’s also vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and free of talc.

Final thoughts

I’ve been using this product for weeks, and really think that Kaia is onto something special with the design and ingredients list in this product. The simplicity of spritzing the product onto your roots before bed and waking up fresher is a time-saver, which makes it that much sweeter that the formula really works.

In 2020, clean beauty exists without compromise, and products like the Takesumi Dry Shampoo are proof of it!
