Creating new habits: Getting started with healthy, effective beauty and body products

Posted by Guest Blogger

So, you’ve vowed to take better care of yourself this year. If that positive change promise includes switching to healthy and effective products for your body, you may not be sure where to start, or what to look for. Don’t worry, we can help!

Here are some things to consider as you make the transition away from conventional products and toward safer alternatives.

One Step at a Time

Don’t feel you need to toss everything you have and change your entire personal care routine all at once. Keep using what you have, but as you run out of your traditional products, swap them for a healthier option. Our beauty consultants can help you find the right products to meet your needs – whether it’s combatting dry skin, soothing sensitive skin, or finding a product that’s free from certain ingredients.

A Little Goes a Long Way

Many natural personal care products are highly concentrated, and it won’t take much to get the same effect of traditional moisturizers and shampoos. For instance, Biosecrets 100% Certified Organic Moroccan Argan Oil is not diluted with fillers or chemical solvents. It’s also packed with 300% more vitamin E than olive oil, omegas and high concentrations of anti-oxidants that heal, nourish and protect your skin, hair and nails using just a few drops a day.

Lather, Just as Effective

A chemical additive called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) causes the lather you get from traditional soaps, toothpastes and shampoos. SLS is harsh on skin and is a possible carcinogen (it’s also on terra20’s Banned Ingredients List). So if your new all-natural soap or body wash isn’t foaming up, don’t think it doesn’t work – it just means there’s no cheap (and potentially harmful) foaming agent in it! Love your lather? Dr. Bronner’s products achieve the same effect by using coconut oil. Why not take the trial size for a spin? (We love the Dr Bronners Rose Castile Soap).

Adios Aluminum

Traditional deodorants often contain aluminum. Some research suggests that skin could absorb aluminum compounds, potentially triggering changes in breast cells’ estrogen receptors. It can also irritate sensitive skin. Make the switch to a natural deodorant and your body will thank you! Many of our customers rave about the purelygreat line, which makes special formulations for men and women, as well as teenage boys and girls.

Feel Like a Natural Woman

Chemical exposure from feminine hygiene products doesn’t always get the coverage that other personal care products do. Commercial pads, panty liners and tampons are awash with synthetic chemicals and may include ingredients that are known or suspected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), carcinogens or allergens.+

Fortunately there are plenty of safer alternatives. You can opt for organic pads, tampons, wipes and panty liners. Natracare is one of many great lines. Or try something like the DivaCup which is specifically designed for internal use and is free of latex, plastic and BPA, as well as colours, odours and dyes. As an added bonus, it cuts back on waste and saves on monthly costs!
