Clean Beauty Drugstore Swaps

When I was in university, and later when I was working in downtown Ottawa, I can remember spending an excessive amount of time at the drugstore browsing the makeup section. I didn’t wear a lot of makeup and certainly wasn’t investing in good quality products at the time, but I loved browsing and shopping for inexpensive, yet fashionably fun finds. As time has gone on, I have swapped my drugstore products for more eco-friendly, natural and toxin-free options I found at terra20.

There are many drug store swaps you can make that won’t break the bank and still be a calming exercise as you decide on which shade of pink you prefer.

Ditch the drugstore products and swap them for these eco-friendly items instead:

Lip Gloss

Perhaps my favourite thing to buy (because you can never have just one) is lip gloss! It never goes out of fashion and having different colours makes me happy. Instead of your usual drugstore brand, try Mineral Fusion’s lip gloss.

It’s a clear gloss with a slight tint that goes on smooth, not sticky. Plus it’s free from mineral oil, which is a by-product of refined crude oil.

Mascara

Pure Anada makes a mascara (I always go for black) that goes on without clumps, doesn’t smudge easily, and wipes off without requiring extra painful scrubbing. Plus, it has an affordable price point that I love.

Face Masks

Grabbing the cheapest, individually packaged face mask at the drugstore may seem like a great ‘Sunday afternoon to myself’ idea, but if you look closely at the ingredients you won’t feel as relaxed. Instead, try one of the sheet masks from Boo Bamboo for hydration and brightening.

Nail Polish

Second only to lip gloss, I’m obsessed with nail polish colours. But finding ones that aren’t harsh and filled with chemicals has become a more recent priority for me.

I’ve been loving Pacifica’s brand and my new go-to Fall colour is their Red Red Wine. Their colours are free of seven chemicals you’d typically find in traditional polishes.

You don’t need to stop your beauty counter browsing, but I do want to you think about switching from your usual drug store brands for one of these natural beauty products. I haven't looked back and I still love spending time looking at the new trendy colours in the makeup aisle.
