Breaking the Drugstore Habit: Eco Queen Ready to Ditch 80s Makeup

After her makeover, Lynne brimmed with enthusiasm over the results.  “I love it. It feels lighter. I don’t feel like I’m wearing cosmetics,” she says. “Samantha is very knowledgeable, and was able to explain what would work, as well as why, and how to use the products.”Lynne LeBlanc uses eco-friendly household cleaners, personal care products that are free from harmful chemicals, and buys fair trade rubber dish gloves and hand-crank flashlights. She has packed her own reusable bags at the grocery store for 20 years—since long before it was considered acceptable.  She still remembers the dirty looks she received for slowing down the checkout line.

“I've recently started my own consulting business focused on helping homeowners introduce energy efficient renewable sources into their homes. My friends consider me an eco-geek,” Lynne says.

But she has a self-proclaimed dirty secret.

“I’m still using the same drug store makeup brand and face cream that I used in high school in the 80’s. Yup! ‘Greener Lynne’ hasn't done for her face what she’s done for her home and family.”

Pealing with laughter, at 47 she looks noticeably younger than her chronological age, even fresh-faced before her Casting Call makeover got underway.  She loves to wear cosmetics, she says, just to brighten up her face.

“My colour palette has changed since the 80’s... I do avoid baby-blue eye shadow and shiny pink cheeks. I now tend to go more neutral, but it's still the same cheap chemical-laden drug store brand!” she explains.  “I see the beautiful cosmetics counter every time I come terra20 and I get overwhelmed looking at all of the options.  So, instead I've just been sticking to my “go to” drug store store brand out of habit.”

She was thrilled to be selected as a Casting Call participant, so she could take advantage of the one-on-one consultation with our cosmetics specialist, Samantha, noting, “I’m looking for something that will work with my changing skin.”

Lynne is comfortable in her own skin – confident with or without the application of colours. But for her, make up is fun. “Not everyone is blessed with perfect skin and bright eyes, so it’s nice for us ladies to have options that aren’t potentially harmful to our bodies,” she says.

The makeover included a few surprises – Lynne says she would never have normally considered a neutral lip colour (she usually wears something bold), has not generally used blush previously, and that when Samantha pulled out a dark charcoal eyeliner her initial reaction was that it would be too dark.

“It turned out well though,” she says. “I think I am ready to give up the products I was using before.  I feel great.”
