The Canadian Cancer Society reports that even a few serious burns as a child can greatly increase a person’s chance of developing skin cancer later in life. So if you're heading south this March break, it all comes down to one thing – protecting them from sunburn.
In addition to sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, look for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that screens out both UVA and UVB rays. The good news, if you go the physical sunblock route, is that active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide both provide broad-spectrum protection, deflecting both UVB and UVA rays.
terra20 conducted a poll of its customers to see what people are looking for in sunscreen for their children. Being free from harmful chemicals was the leading consideration (94%) followed by a sunscreen that is waterproof (70%). Of course, parents also look for a sunscreen that is so gentle on their children’s sensitive skin (53%).
Perhaps not surprisingly, what we want for our children, we also want for our own bodies – a healthy product (91%) that is waterproof or water-resistant (56%) for all that fun in the sun. Adults also look for a product that doesn’t feel oily (47%).
Our survey participants also made some recommendations:
“Consonant and Green Beaver because they are natural, do not have any fragrance and are safe to use on my toddler.”
“Goddess Garden because it is not greasy, it’s easy to apply, and it is organic.”
When it comes to what parents (especially moms) want to use on their face, the qualities shift a little and a product that is non-oily becomes even more important. Participants noted that they preferred organic products that were also cruelty-free (so it’s a good thing that none of terra20’s products are tested on animals!)
We also asked some of our team members for their recommendations for sunscreen products that make life easier for parents to protect their little ones – and themselves.
Like our survey participants who recommended Green Beaver Certified Organic SPF Kids Sunscreen, I like the Green Beaver Spray Sunscreen SPF 27 for all-over coverage; it doesn’t leave white marks, and is 24% zinc oxide. It’s competitively priced, certified organic and made close to Ottawa – in Hawkesbury.
Samantha chose Matter Baby Suncare Stick, noting “My mother had skin cancer caused from the sun, so I have to be very careful. I have always had sensitive skin and this sunscreen is perfect for me. The Baby Suncare Stick has 20% zinc, which offers UVA & UVB protection.”
Andalou’s Oil Control Beauty Balm SPF 30 came highly recommended by Chelsea who picked it for the “all-day oil control and a more matte finish than traditional face sunscreens, as well as the 20% zinc oxide for full coverage. They’re mostly certified organic ingredients, non-GMO verified, and gluten free!”
