The best road trip begins with these weekend essentials

Who doesn’t love a weekend getaway? Lucky for us, there’s no shortage of great weekend getaway destinations close to Ottawa. We can’t help you choose the place or plan your wardrobe, but we can certainly help you figure out what to bring!

Water and coffee!

Many road trip friendships have veered into dangerous territory due to poor hydration and need for caffeine. I am a big fan of S’well water bottles but I am currently coveting the Corksicle Rose Quartz Canteen. Triple insulation and stainless steel construction keep liquids ice cold for up to 25 hours or hot for up to 12 (!) without freezing or sweating.

Staying caffeinated is also key. This 3-in-1 tumbler by Zoku makes sure your double double stays hot. The tight-fitting lid promotes sipping on the go.

Snacks

Great snacks are a required part of every weekend getaway. Plan ahead and bring some along to minimize the lure and the time spent at roadside fast food restaurants. Some ideas for your next road trip: Clif Bars come in very handy if a certain someone is getting hangry before your final destination (Crunchy Peanut Butter is a fave of ours!), Central Roast Milk Chocolate Rainbow Drops are exactly the kind of thing you can parcel out to kids as a reward, and Neal Brothers Himalayan Pink Salt Popcorn will please any snacker.  Made Good Vanilla Crisp Squares will take you back to your own childhood road trips (minus the part about your brother hogging the back seat).

Journal

For me, a journal is part of every travel experience because I want to remember it afterwards! Plus, they give kids something to do in the back seat. Wirebound journals are great for the car. We love this Frida Kahlo motif by ecojot. It’s made in Canada too!

A well-organized makeup case

I pare down the makeup and bring hotel-size shampoo and conditioner on weekend getaways to keep my luggage on the lighter side. Easier said than done, right? Keep you and your travel essentials organized with a great little pouch! This Go Light pouch is roomy, lined, and has an interior pocket. What’s more, it’s waterproof!

A hostess gift

If your destination includes a friend’s cottage or the loan of a condo, it’s always nice to say thank you with a hostess gift. You can’t go wrong with edible treats like chocolate, but I also really like this pre-made hostess set. It includes a bamboo cutting board, bamboo cheese knives, and cute napkins! All you need to do is add a bottle of wine, maybe a hunk of good cheese, and you’re done. Further on that wine and cheese theme, this pretty handcrafted glass wine stopper would delight any wine lover!
