5 Farmers' Market Essentials

Full disclosure: this girl lives for farmers’ markets. Whether I’m traveling abroad or exploring the local market scene, walking through a market is my favourite way to support local makers, soak in the culture and bond with some cute pooches. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday than strolling through stands of beautiful local produce and connecting with the makers who grow our food.

Ottawa is home to some pretty amazing markets and after our long harsh winters, they are pure bliss. Not only are markets a foodie haven but they are also a great way to reduce our carbon footprint and minimize our plastic waste. Bare with me here as I get pretty darn excited about my farmers’ market essentials for my favourite season in Ottawa.

My Bag Tote

Hands up for anyone who has left their reusable bags at home! This is an obvious one on your journey to reduce waste, but sometimes SO hard to follow through with. The My Bag tote is the perfect remedy for the forgetful shopper.

This mighty and durable reusable shopping bag folds up neatly, taking up minimal space in a pocket, purse or glove compartment. You can take it everywhere you go without even knowing it.

It holds two to three times the weight of a conventional plastic grocery bag which means you can buy that extra bunch of beets without a bag-breaking disastrous walk home - we’ve all been there. Plus, it has a handy little pocket inside for your phone and keys.

Carebags Produce Bags

I try not to leave home without my wallet, keys and Carebags. These stretchy produce bags are game changers when it comes to ditching plastic. Perfect for grocery shopping and market-going, they are durable, stretchy and great for showing the environment some love.

I also absolutely love that these guys are made in Canada. Plus, when you’ve used them to bring home one too many bunches of sandy carrots, you can throw them in your washing machine and hang them to dry. Need I say more?

Attitude Veggie Spray

Here comes the fun part - bringing all your beautiful veggies home and preparing them for the week. A relatively new addition to my market haul essentials, veggie spray has been welcomed into my post-market routine.

Just fill up the sink with fresh cold water and add a few generous sprays of veggies wash and let your veggies soak for a bit. This gentle yet effective plant-based wash does a stand-up job at removing dirt, pesticides, wax and impurities.

This spray works wonders on extra sandy market beets. I love the ritual of getting all my veggies washed and prepared before they go in the fridge so I have ready-to-eat veggies throughout the week.

Abeego Beeswax Food Wrap

Calling all avocado lovers - this one's for you. Abeego natural food wraps are made with a combination of beeswax, tree resin, jojoba oil and linen for a wrap that keeps your fresh herbs and avocado halves fresh for longer.

This breathable, antibacterial wrap has quickly become my favourite alternative to plastic wrap. Once your fresh bunch of kale is washed and cleaned, wrap it up in one of these guys for crisp kale all week long.

Stasher Silicone Bags

I think it would be an understatement to say that I’m obsessed with my Stasher bags. To be honest, I think friends, family and co-workers are a little tired of my constant Stasher soapbox.

These guys are the BEST. My all-time favourite plastic-free alternative, these 100% pure silicone reusable bags will become your new best friend. Great for storing all your freshly washed and cut market veggies, but also great for lunches, travel and days at the beach.

To top it all off, these guys are freezer, microwave AND dishwasher safe. What can’t the Stasher do?
