When you think of Earth Day what comes to mind? Planting trees? Picking up litter? Practicing the three R’s? This year we challenge you to think beyond the traditional Earth day or monthly activities and challenge yourself to make simple changes in your everyday routines and products. And not just for the month or Earth Day, but every day of the year.

Our Earth should be celebrated every day, and in recognition of Earth Day we have rounded up our top 20 picks to make being kinder to our planet and ourselves a little easier every day.

  1. S’well bottles – I think we can agree that using reusable bottles cuts down on plastic waste, but S’well has partnered with UNICEF, and has committed over one million dollars since 2017 to help provide clean and safe water to the world's most vulnerable communities.
  2. Tentree Apparel – If you are familiar with this brand then you know that for every piece of clothing or accessory purchased 10 trees are planted. Since 2019, all the Tentree apparel purchased from terra20 has planted 7,790 trees, and since founding in 2012 they have planted 53,130,189 trees around the world!

  3. Fluid Coffee – A small scale coffee roastery, nestled in Clayton, ON, operates completely off the grid, generating electricity and heat directly from renewable resources. 100% of their water used is recycled back into nature, and when they deliver their products to terra20 it is in their electric vehicle charged by solar electricity.

  4. Coffee Sock – Now that you have your solar roasted coffee, meet the Coffee Sock, the reusable coffee filter. Made from GOTS certified organic cotton and costs a fraction of what premium paper coffee filters cost. Simply brew, rinse, hang to dry and repeat. And at the end of its life, it is compostable!

  5. Sarjesa Don’t think we have forgotten about you tea lovers. Sarjesa is a Canadian tea, supporting Canadian women. Sourcing fair trade and organic tea blends, using 100% compostable tea bags, Sarjesa is a socially focused company, supporting local violence prevention programming for women in crisis.

  6. The Swag BagEliminate produce waste with The Swag Bag. Think that mushroom only has a good 3-4 days in the fridge? Think again. With The Swag Bags clever three unique layer design, each layer plays a key role in providing hydration and breathability for your produce - keeping produce fresh for 2+ weeks. It’s true. We’ve tried it!

  7. terra20 Produce BagsThese bags are made with organic cotton, meaning no pesticides were used on the plants. That’s a win for us and a win for soil and animals. Not only do these handy produce bags cut down on plastic waste, but you can also use them to contain your reusable masks when you toss them into the washing machine.

  8. reCAP Lids – If your home is full of mason jars than reCAP lids are for you. Convert a regular-mouthed mason jar into a spray bottle, soap dispenser, capped drinking vessel or easy to open snack container. We love the versatility of mason jars, and reCAP takes the mason jar game to the next level.

  9. Ecologie Beeswax Wraps – Wrap your food in something you’ll feel good about. It’s reusable, compostable and is available in a variety of sizes. And at the end of its life, you can compost or use as fire starter. Made with cotton coated in beeswax, coconut oil and tree resin. And a portion of sales is donated to Education Without Borders.

  10. Stasher Bag – This might just be your new best friend in the kitchen for storing food, packing lunches, freezing leftovers. These reusable silicone bags are easy to care for and are exceptionally durable. Silicone is made from silica (found in sand) and will never break down into dangerous microplastics.

  11. Terra Ties – Introducing plastic-free hair ties. Did you know conventional hair ties made from synthetic rubber and polyester could take thousands of years to degrade? Terra Ties are made from organic cotton and natural rubber, making them biodegradable.

  12. Birch Babe Mascara – The first of its kind! Clean Cert certified, made in Canada, vegan and produces no plastic waste. Simply purchase the reusable wand and tin of powdered mascara (available in black or brown.) Then wet the wand and roll in tin, whip off access on edge of tin and apply to lashes. Keep the wand clean with gentle soap and water.

  13. Haakaa – The perfect alternative for women looking for a safe, simple, economical, and waste-free way to manage their periods. Made from 100% soft and flexible silicone, the Haakaa Flow Cups are free from BPA, chlorine and other harsh chemicals that are commonly found in conventional pads and tampons.

  14. Cheeks Ahoy – Whether you’re looking for solutions to break up with paper towels or facial rounds to remove makeup, Cheeks Ahoy is sending you a life preserver! Reusable, washable, soft fabric options to replace the disposable options currently infiltrating your daily routine.

  15. La Petite Ourse Diapers – Did you know that every disposable diaper that was ever used is still stilling sitting in a landfill today? Conventional diapers take hundreds of years to decompose. That’s why these adorable reusable cloth diapers from La Petite Ourse made our list. A variety of inserts for the diapers are available.

  16. Cora Ball – The little ball helping reduce microfibre pollution direct from our washing machines. Designed after coral it’s designed to trap teeny tiny fibres so they are not rinsed away with the laundry water. But using this ball requires patience, as it takes a long time to see a buildup of fibres, and it also depends on the types of fabrics you’re frequently washing.

  17. H2Only Cloth – It's all in the name. No need for spray cleaners, cleaning chemicals, polishes, abrasive cleaners or paper towels. Use, wash, dry, repeat. If cared for properly, a single cloth can last up to ten years. Staff tip: cut cloth in half for easier use and you’ll have two cloths. It also works wonders in cleaning glasses, tablets and phones.

  18. terra20 Cellulose cloth – The dish cloth that does it all. Made from cellulose and cotton, this cloth can absorb 15 times its weight in water, can be washed up to 300 times without losing its absorbency, and at the end of its life, it will compost in 28 days!

  19. Soap Works – We love that these soaps are sold sans packaging. With so many different scents available there is a soap for everyone. Not to mention they are made in Canada, free from harmful ingredients and have a variety of vegan options.

  20. ecobar Our cleaning and personal care refill station is no secret, and in the 8+ years we’ve been open, with your help, ecobar refills have helped divert over 20,000 plastic bottles from landfills and waterways. And we’re always looking for ways to improve the refill experience, so watch for the launch of BYOC (bring your own container) in the coming months!
