What's going in your mouth?

While many families have changed their skincare regime, bathing products, makeup, children’s supplies and more to be eco-friendly, less toxic and more sustainable, fewer of us have given thought to our dental routine.

We may not consider our twice-daily brushing habits when trying to be more natural and green, but making the change doesn’t have to be difficult. With so many conversations happening about reducing our planet’s use of plastic (and given that over 100 million plastic toothbrushes end up in our landfills), there’s never been a better time to think about making a change.

There are a variety of options for toothpaste, mouth wash, dental floss, tooth brushes and more. You and your kids can swap out the regular products for something that can be biodegradable, less toxic, and still effective.

Here are the items to look at when making the switch to your at-home dental care:

Your Toothbrush

If you want a manual toothbrush for at home or travel, check out the bamboo brushes from Woobamboo. The handle is made of sustainable bamboo and is completely biodegradable. Plus, the bristles can be recycled.

Choose your preferred firmness for the bristles, and grab a couple of children’s soft brushes for your little ones too. The smaller handles are perfect for little hands and early brushers. These are also a handy size for in your travel bag or purse to have ready when you need them.

My daughter has been ‘loving’ this toothbrush (in her own words) because the bristles are soft and she likes that it’s made from bamboo (I think she’s been learning more and more about sustainable materials lately!).

Your Dental Floss

Admit it, none of us are flossing enough, but now is the time to embrace what our dental hygienist tells us at every appointment. Stock up on new dental floss that is also eco-friendly. While wax coated floss is available, consider switching to silk. Radius Natural Silk Floss is hand spun by a Fair Trade co-op. It’s 100% biodegradable making it guilt-free when you toss it in the garbage. There are also travel sachets you can buy for on-the-go.

This floss is soft enough to use that even I am grabbing for it more than I usually do when it comes to flossing.

Your Mouth Wash

Using an alcohol-free mouthwash without harsh chemicals is a great way to help freshen your breath and reduce tartar build up. The JASON Power Smile Mouthwash has a refreshing mint flavour to leave you feeling confident in the freshness of your breath when you are getting up close and personal with others. I think even my pre-teen son can get used to adding this to his routine.

Your Toothpaste

When looking for a toothpaste for your family, the biggest issue when stepping away from your usual pharmacy selection won’t be efficacy but instead it may just depend on the taste your children prefer. If you check out Green Beaver’s toothpaste options, you’ll have a wide selection to choose from such as orange, mint, green apple, spearmint, star anise (which tastes like licorice) so finding the flavour your child prefers will be easy.

Just in case you are wondering, the spearmint flavour is my daughter’s favourite. I’m happy to get them any kind they like if they continue brushing without a fuss!
