The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that over eight percent of the waste generated per person per day could be recovered for composting. In addition, over twelve percent of the municipal solid waste in the United States is comprised of food scraps. This adds up to nearly 32 million tons per year. By starting at home, we can all do our part to collect compostable materials and help divert waste from our landfills.
In order for any collection program to be successful, it has to be simple. If it is easy to collect food scraps, then it is more likely to be embraced by each and every member of your family. There are a few easy steps which can help ensure your house is doing its part to make a difference.
For Kathleen McPhee, it was caring for ill parents that triggered her realization that the things we eat and use on our bodies could be connected to our long-term health outcomes.
“My parents were really unwell. Dad had skin cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and mom was struggling with high blood pressure,” she says. “I realized that while there are some things you can’t prevent, there are a lot of things that can be prevented before they happen.”
A carpenter by trade, Jessica Madott grew up in the Ottawa area, spending many hours of her childhood roaming the great outdoors and developing a strong appreciation for nature. As a pre-teen, she had a poster in her locker at school that read, “I’ll clean up my planet, but not my room.”
“These concepts never faded – reducing, reusing, recycling, healthy living, shopping locally, animal and environmental welfare have always been at the forefront for many of my day-to-day decisions,” Jessica explains.
